World Book Day - Character Dress-Up Day
The children had a fantastic time dressing up for an early World Book Day celebration! We spotted two Little Miss Tickles, several beloved characters from the Harry Potter series, and even had a special visit from Paddington Bear—complete with his signature marmalade sandwich tucked safely in his hat all day long! It was wonderful to see both children and teachers come together to celebrate books and share their love of reading and storytelling.
Debating Competition Success
On Tuesday, our Form Six debating team competed in the online semi-final of the prestigious Cicero Cup. The event was originally contested by more than a hundred school teams. Tuesday saw the cohort of Kira, Alma, Mimi and Ilia face opponents from Broomfield School. They had to oppose the motion of, ‘This House would introduce a 9 pm curfew for all under 16’s.’ What a challenge! We had to wait forty-eight hours for the outcome of their endeavours but their patience paid off as they were one of only six teams to make the finals in the Summer Term. A fabulous achievement for all involved.
Form Six Trip - Junior Citizenship Scheme
It’s been a busy week for Form Six as they embarked on the annual Westminster Junior Citizenship scheme on Wednesday. They travelled to Covent Garden to meet a range of agencies which led them through the crucial transition process from primary to secondary school. These included: The Police, Fire Service, Paramedics and TFL. The workshops included: How to stay safe while cycling around London, the correct way to use public transport and key advice on internet safety. The Form Six cohort was pitted against other teams from different schools, and magnificently received the highest points total for their listening and understanding of the important topics.
11+ Results
A huge congratulations to the Class of 2025! They have now completed their 11+ exams and, with the exception of one, all know where they will be heading in September. They have shown tremendous dedication and valiant effort throughout this process, and their results are a testament to their hard work.
The children received successful offers from 26 top London senior independent, state, and grammar schools, with 30% of the offers including scholarships across music, sports, art, and academics. These particularly impressive achievements were spread between five members of the cohort of 13.
The children will be continuing their educational journeys at Wetherby Senior, the inaugural class at Wetherby Pembridge, Queen’s Gate School, City of London School for Girls, Francis Holland Regent’s Park, UCS, Latymer Upper, Wycombe Abbey, North London Collegiate School, St Paul’s Girls, Hurlingham Academy, and Holland Park Senior School. Bravo, Form Six!
Poetry Recital and Second-Hand Book Sale
What a captivating poetry recital we had this afternoon! From the Junior classes (J1 – F2) sharing their own beautifully written poems and expressive class recitations to the Senior classes (F3 – F6) delivering eloquent performances of works by poets such as William Blake, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Shel Silverstein. We hope you enjoyed listening to the diverse range of poetry and gained a glimpse into what the children have been exploring in English this term.
A heartfelt thank you to all the families who donated books for this year’s second-hand book sale a total of £324 was raised. The Children's Book Project has been incredibly grateful for the support from our school community, and we are delighted to continue supporting them again this year. A special thank you to Mrs Walton for arranging for the unsold books to be delivered to them, and to the Parent Fundraising Committee for organising this wonderful event. Proceeds from book sales and card donations will go towards the School Bursary Fund, helping to support families within our school community.
Upcoming
Open Day - Friday 21 March
Now that the poetry recital has concluded, our attention turns to our next much-anticipated event: Open Day! This annual tradition is always a highlight at the school, and the children are excited to welcome family members to give a tour of where they spend most of their weekdays. We look forward to welcoming you on Friday 21 March 2025.
An invitation with a link to book your entry time slot will be sent to you early next week. This is simply to manage the flow of entry, and families are welcome to stay until the end of the Open Morning at 11.30 am. This allows us to prepare for the Open Afternoon, where prospective parents will visit, and the Form Six children will act as ambassadors for the school.
Bidding farewell to Miss Theobald
Miss Theobald joined us last September on a short-term, six-month contract to help some of our youngest pupils settle in and adjust to life in primary school, while also providing an extra pair of hands during our busy lunchtime rush. She has been a wonderful lunchtime and park-time assistant—goodness, how time has flown!
On behalf of all the pupils and teachers at CHS, we would like to thank Miss Theobald for her positivity and calm support over the past few months. We are certain that as she continues her journey in education, she will be an asset to whichever school she joins.
Artwork of the Week
Veda in Form Two, for a beautifully painted loom and some excellent textile work. Fantastic colour mixing and meticulous weaving, inspired by Alma Thomas’s colourful, abstract paintings. Well done Veda!
