ℯNEWS February, 14 2025
Mrs Hampton began the week with a Good Work Assembly, celebrating the fantastic achievements of the children throughout the first half of the term. Certificates were awarded for a range of accomplishments, including to the Form Six pupils who took part in the Cicero Debate Competition, Mimi in Form Six for her music award in the final round of the National Independent Schools Association competition, and various in-school achievements recognised by teachers in appreciation of the children’s hard work and dedication.
Safer Internet Day
For Safer Internet Day on Tuesday, 11th February teachers highlighted the importance of being safe while using the internet. The theme for this year was; “Too Good to be True?' Protecting Yourself and Others from Online Scams.
The children learned about online scams, what they are and how to recognise the warning signs. They also revisited the importance of protecting personal information and explored how scams such as ‘phishing’ work. In addition, they looked at how to create strong passwords to help keep their online information secure.
Carnival Day - Friday 14th February
The children enjoyed a wonderful day of activities celebrating the themes of love and friendship. They created bunting decorated with messages and drawings of what love means to them, made heart-shaped treats, crafted ‘love trees’ and masks, and danced to love-themed songs—all inspired by the joy of the day.
Many children embraced the occasion by dressing up in costumes, including Dorothy and Toto, Barbie and Ken, Elphaba and Glinda, and even a few Harry Potter costumes! It was a fantastic way to celebrate Valentine’s Day together as a school community.
11+ Outcomes
While the children have been busily occupied at school today, results of the recent 11+ assessments have been coming in. We are delighted to share that, once again, our pupils in Form Six have received offers from a range of excellent schools. Congratulations, Form Six; we are all extremely proud of you. You all definitely deserve a very well-earned half-term break with no need to think about the 11+. In due course, we will circulate school offers; however, we hope that the CHS community will allow the children the time to discuss their choices with their families before any inquiries or announcements are made.
Upcoming
Poetry Competition - Wednesday, 26 February
Directly after the half-term break, on Wednesday, 26th February, we are looking forward to welcoming two, guest adjudicators to judge our in-house poetry competition.
Miss Wendy Innes, Principal of Great Beginnings Montessori Nursery School, will spend the morning with our pupils from Junior One to Form Two, listening to the poems they have written themselves as part of this term’s whole-school focus on poetry.
In the afternoon, Miss Amy Wallace, Headmistress of Queen’s Gate School, will join Mrs Hampton for a poetry-filled session featuring a selection of works from Michael Rosen to A.A. Milne, as pupils in KS2 (Form Three to Six) recite their chosen poems.
Every pupil from Junior One to Form Six will have the opportunity to take part in the competition. A selection of commended and highly commended pupils from each class will be invited to recite their poems, along with each class’s choral poem, in front of parents, at our Poetry Recital at the Victory Services Club on Friday, 7th March.
Please do support your children over the holiday in learning and reciting their poems. While there can only be a small number of "winners" in any competition, our tradition of inclusivity ensures that every pupil’s participation is valued and celebrated.
Junior One Pizza Express Trip - Friday, 28 February
Our youngest pupils will soon be visiting Pizza Express in St Christopher Place, where they will have the opportunity to try their hand at making their own pizzas. This enjoyable experience will give them an insight into the pizza-making process, and we are sure they will return to school having had a fantastic time.
World Book Day - Dress Up Day
On Tuesday 4th March, we invite children to come to school dressed as a character from a book they have enjoyed. This is a wonderful opportunity for pupils to share their favourite stories and discover new reading recommendations from their friends. We encourage children to be able to explain who or what they are dressed as and which book their inspiration comes from. Even a small prop or clue can help spark interest in a great read! Where possible, we suggest using items from home to create a costume or arranging a costume swap with classmates for a fun and sustainable approach.
Artwork of the Week
All of Form Five, for brilliant collaboration in creating their large-scale collage landscape, inspired by ‘Wanderer above the Sea of Fog’ by Casper David Friedrich. Well done Rafeeq, Maxine, Kira, Emeer, Mikayla, Mariam, Lara and Atia!
