ℯNEWS MARCH 8, 2024

Thank you for joining us this afternoon for another wonderful Poetry Recital at the Carisbrooke Hall. This event closed what has been an exceptional celebration of books.

Form Six Trip to Transport Museum - TFL Junior Citizenship scheme

A day at the London Transport Museum is an exciting trip for any Form Six pupil, but Monday’s visit was particularly thrilling. The pupils were invited to take part in the prestigious TFL Junior Citizenship scheme. During the day, they met with the emergency services and representatives from Transport for London, acquiring the skills needed to become a model London pupil. The occasion was treated as a competition against other schools attending with points awarded for good listening and incisive questions. I’m delighted to say that the Form Six class finished on top of the leaderboard and was awarded their certificate.

CHS Book Week - 4th - 8th March 2024

To launch CHS Book Week, Mrs Walsh and Mrs Wells hosted an assembly on Monday. Staff members across the school shared photos of themselves when they were children along with their favourite childhood book. CHS pupils enjoyed playing Guess the Teacher and were shocked to see how some staff members had changed while others still look the same. The children also had to figure out the answer to several riddles about characters from famous stories. Keep reading for a riddle below.

On Tuesday, we welcomed author, Zohra Nabi to the Senior classrooms. She enthralled the children with her story The Kingdom over the Sea and took them on a thrilling journey to mystical lands, created by the children themselves. Sorcerers, wizards, heroes and magic abounded, intricately woven together from the ideas of the children, to create a world ready for an action-packed adventure. The children will have a display of these magical world maps ready to share with you on Open Day.

CHS opened its doors to a wide range of book characters on Wednesday including; Mary Poppins, Alice in Wonderland, Willy Wonka, Sherlock Holmes, and Ms March to name but a few. The characters (pupils) took part in story-themed workshops throughout the day, working in mixed-age groups.

Author James Allen visited the school on Thursday to share his book Spookasaurus. He talked to the children about the process of creating a book from its beginnings of storyboarding to finally having it published. It was delightful to see lots of the Juniors walking out of school absorbed in their own signed copies of the book.

Poetry Recital

Thank you one and all for joining us for a wonderful recital this afternoon. The children all took part in choral and individual poems with character and confidence. From Milligan to Stevenson our children delivered their poems beautifully.

Second-Hand Book Sale

We are grateful to the Parents Committee for organising such a super event. We hope you all enjoyed browsing the selection of books that were donated by the CHS community. Overall, a total of £402.98 was raised for the CHS Bursary Fund and £32 for the children’s chosen charity, UNICEF. Thank you once again for all of your donations.

General Knowledge Quiz Club Semi-Finals

The Connaught House School General Knowledge team was in action again on Friday. The four pupils: Eleanor (captain) Mimi, Atia and Alexander were up against 47 other teams in a massive online competition. There were thirty questions of increasing difficulty: identifying the sculptures of Rodin and the spelling of ‘Occurrence’ were just two of those they faced. The team started slowly and ended round one in 27th place. They gradually made their way up the leaderboard and were in fifth place with ten questions left. On the final question they had to decide which city was furthest north: Paris, New York, London or Vancouver. By getting the answer correct (it is London) they booked their place in the final at Oxford University. What an excellent performance from our fantastic team and what a memorable adventure lies ahead next term!

Congratulations Form Six!

Now that the 11+ season has come to a close, our children in Form Six have made their decisions on their senior school choices. We can share with you that after receiving offers from a host of excellent schools, our pupils have accepted their offers at the following schools; Francis Holland North, Godolphin & Latymer, Harrodian, Latymer Upper, Putney High, Queen’s Gate, St Paul’s Girls, St Marylebone, UCS, and Wetherby.

Congratulations to all involved, staff, pupils and parents, we are very proud once again of the children’s efforts.

Easter Egg Collection for St John’s Hospice

This year we are collecting chocolate Easter Eggs for the patients at St John’s Hospice. This is part of the charitable work with the local community and Marble Arch Partnership. If you would like to donate an Easter egg please send it in with your child on the 25th March. Ready for delivery to St John’s Hospice on Tuesday 26th March with the school council. This simple gesture of kindness means so much to the recipients and is an ideal opportunity to open our children’s minds to those less fortunate than themselves.

Please note: the eggs must be in an unopened box, and nut free.

Wishing all our mothers and grandmothers a very happy Mothering Sunday.
